Lessons in Cutting

Taylor has her first "picture day" at preschool on Friday and she was in desperate need of having her bangs cut. With our crazy schedules I didn't know when I would be able to take her to get them cut...so I decided to cut them myself. It was pretty easy and while they're not perfect, they're good enough. I'm trying to let go of perfectionism when being imperfect will make our life simpler. And of course, I saved $ by not paying someone else to cut her bangs and by not spending gas to go somewhere to have it done. All in all, I think they look pretty good.

Ironically, Taylor had her first lesson with scissors last night. I had wondered at what age kids start to use scissors. I came across these scissors at the dollar store that have a spring between the handles to make cutting easier for beginners. I decided to let Taylor have a go at it last night and she did really well. She was accepting of me trying to help her get the right grasp and she didn't become frustrated at all when she kept having to readjust her hands. I would tell her " your thumb goes here...and then two fingers here...OK?" Then she'd keep saying "Where's my thumb, Mom?". And "Two fingers" as she put her fingers back into the handles. She was cutting for about 20 minutes. Of course these are safety scissors, so there's no risk of her cutting herself.
